Policy Preferences of Texas Primary Voters: Abortion, Marijuana, Guns, Immigration & Transgender Sports

The Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center surveyed 3,000 likely Texas Democratic and Republican primary voters in August 2025 to better understand their policy views ahead of the 2026 primaries. Findings reveal sharp partisan divides: Democratic voters overwhelmingly support expanded access to abortion, legalization of marijuana, and stricter gun laws, while Republican voters express stronger support for abortion restrictions, limited or no marijuana legalization, and maintaining current gun laws. The parties also diverge on immigration and citizenship, with Republicans favoring broader deportations and opposing birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants, while Democrats largely support limiting deportations to those with felony convictions and maintaining birthright citizenship. These results highlight the polarized policy landscape shaping Texas politics. View the full report to explore the findings in detail Read the full report
