The 2026 Down-Ballot Texas Republican & Democratic Primaries: Attorney General, Comptroller & Agriculture Commissioner
The Barbara Jordan Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University has released a new survey report analyzing voter attitudes in the upcoming 2026 Texas Republican and Democratic primaries. Between August 6–12, 2025, the Center surveyed 1,500 likely Republican and 1,500 likely Democratic primary voters, providing critical insights into candidate recognition, voter preferences, and potential electoral outcomes.
Key findings reveal that most voters remain undecided in these down-ballot races, with many lacking familiarity with leading candidates. For example, in the Republican Attorney General primary, more than 70% of voters are unsure how they would vote, while similar levels of uncertainty are seen across the Comptroller and Agriculture Commissioner contests. On the Democratic side, recognition of Attorney General candidates Joe Jaworski and Nathan Johnson is limited, with 60% of likely voters undecided.
The report also assesses favorability for potential Democratic statewide candidates, including Gina Hinojosa, Roland Gutierrez, Ron Nirenberg, and Vikki Goodwin. Overall, the findings underscore both the competitiveness of these races and the importance of name recognition, voter outreach, and engagement as Texas heads into a pivotal 2026 election season.
