Black Texas Voters Say Race Cost Crockett the Primary —and the Party Takes Them for Granted

A new survey from Texas Southern University's Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center finds that 80% of Black Texas voters believe Jasmine Crockett's race played an important role in non-Black Democratic primary voters choosing James Talarico over her in the March 2026 U.S. Senate primary. More than 3 in 4 Black Texas voters also agree that the Democratic Party in Texas takes Black voters for granted, including nearly three-fourths of Black Democrats themselves. Despite the outcome, Crockett's loss doesn't appear to be depressing turnout — just 7% say they're now less likely to vote in November, while close to a third report the primary result has made them more likely to show up.
